Kirishima for Kids: The Perfect Takachiho Farm & Egg Farm Itinerary

Takachiho & Tamago Farm: The Ultimate Kirishima Day Trip for Kids

When you think of Kirishima, you might think of ancient shrines, volcanoes, and luxurious hot springs. But for international families traveling with kids, Kirishima is also a hidden paradise!

Are your children getting a little bored with history spots? They need to run free, eat amazing ice cream, and touch soft animals.

As a local dad, here is my recommended, safe, and delicious morning itinerary that will make your kids (and your wallet!) very happy.

Morning: Run Free at Takachiho Farm (高千穂牧場)

Start your morning (around 9:30 AM) at Takachiho Farm. It is actually located in Miyazaki, but it’s right on the border of Kirishima and very easy to access. Best of all: Entrance and Parking are FREE!

  • The Scene: The pasture spreads out with a stunning view of the Kirishima volcanic mountains. It is a massive, safe green grass area where kids can just run. It’s a great place to let out their energy.
  • The Experience: Your family can get very close to cows and sheep. They are used to people and are very gentle. Depending on the time, there are also cow milking experiences or pony rides.
  • The Vital-Order: You MUST try their soft-serve ice cream. Made from the farm’s high-quality milk, it is incredibly rich, creamy, and famous throughout Kyushu. Don’t leave without one!

Lunch: The Perfect “Omurice” at Kirishima Tamago Bokujo / Egg Farm (霧島たまご牧場)

Once the kids are hungry, jump back in your car. Just a 2-minute drive away is Kirishima Tamago Bokujo. This is a small, happy farm specializing in free-range eggs.

  • The Lunch Solve for Picky Eaters: Does your child refuse to eat raw fish or complex Japanese food? The restaurant here serves the perfect solution: “Omurice.” This is a wonderful Japanese Yoshoku (Western-style Japanese) dish of fried rice wrapped in a fluffy, fresh egg omelet. It is sweet, savory, and kids absolutely love it.
  • Post-Lunch Fun: After lunch, you can buy some animal feed and let the kids feed the rabbits and goats in the広場 (plaza). It’s a peaceful and fun environment.

How to Get There (The Car Rule)

To make this morning itinerary stress-free, you definitely need a rental car.

These farms are tucked away in the scenic highlands. While they are very close to each other (less than a 5-minute drive), public transport is not practical for a family with kids. Having your own car means you can move at your kids’ pace.
